Nikki’s grown-up life

Songstress Nikki Webster talks about life, the HSC and the release of her new album.

You’re about to launch a new album and sit for your HSC. How have you coped?
I am crazy! The HSC has already started. During my school holidays I was performing but I’ve been studying hard. It’s been frantic but good. I just kind of juggle everything around.

Your album, The Best of Nikki Webster is out on November 29. What can we expect?
There will be no new material but there will be Under Southern Skies from the Olympics. They are songs that really mean something to me. Strawberry Kisses would have to be my favourite because it was my first song. And I’d also have to say Don’t Give Up because I co-wrote that one earlier this year.

Let’s Dance – was that song written by Delta Goodrem?
It was co-written by Delta, Mark Holden and a guy called Axel Breitung. I have done a lot of work with Mark and he knows what I like.

You turn 18 next year – is the new look to distinguish yourself from that image of the young girl from the Olympics?
It’s been four years since the Olympics and people are suddenly realising I am older. I’m growing up. I don’t live in a bubble. I can look quite young so it’s good to look my age.

Do you think people will always remember you as that flying girl from the Sydney Olympics?
It hasn’t bothered me. I did it for my country but it only annoys me when people only remember that and ignore my other achievements.

What do you plan to do once the HSC is over? Are you going to Schoolies?
I’m not going to Schoolies – I don’t have any real plans. I’m going to take a break to figure out what I want to do. I’m going to the US for a holiday and then I’ll holiday with my family for Christmas. Hopefully I’ll be able to combine music and fashion in my future but I’m always up for new things. I’d like to get into writing more music. I like to challenge myself.

“I Met Nikki Webster”

D-Girl reader Edwina was lucky enough to be our roving celeb reporter, and got to interview one of her fave singers, Nikki Webster!

DG: How many music lessons do you have a year?
N: Probably one a week but sometimes none, so it just depends. If I’m performing, my performances are kind of my music lessons I suppose.

DG: When you were in The Wizard of Oz how did you go to school?
N: When I was doing Wizard of Oz I had a full-time tutor. My school work was sent home and I worked with the tutor. He also went to the shows with me. But otherwise, I go to school.

DG: Do you have any pets?
N: I do. I have two dogs. One called Star and one called Princess. I have a bird called Cheeky and I have a fish called Angelwings. I also have a duck who doesn’t live with me anymore, but his name is Quackers.

DG: I like wearing the Nikki Webster clothes. Do you design them?
N: I do. I design them straight from when I’m drawing them on a piece of paper, to seeing them designed on the computer, to actually seeing them made, and then seeing you walking around in them.

DG: What is your latest album Let’s Dance like?
N: It’s mostly dance but it’s got a kind of rock feel. Basically, it’s for people who like to dance, so it’s full of really upbeat songs. There are six original songs that have been written specially for the album and six remakes. It’s different from my last album because it has a story to it, and really different beats and perspectives.

Total Girl: Was it fun recording ‘I Wanna Be Like You’?
Nikki Webster: I had a great time recording ‘I Wanna Be LIke YOu’ as it has a great tune, and it is a very happy song!

TG: If you lived in the jungle, what animal would you be?
NW: If i lived in the jungle I would probably like to be a snake so I could slither around and spy on everyone and listen to their conversations without them noticing me.

TG: Did you enjoy playing Dorothy in ‘The Wizard Of Oz’?
NW: I loved playing Dorothy in the ‘Wizard Of Oz’, it was an experience I’ll never forget. I also enjoyed getting to travel with the show as I got to meet alot of you guys in my travels.

TG: What’s your favourite song to dance to?
NW: My favourite song and dance apart from the one in ‘I Wanna Be Like You’ clip is probably the Ketchup Dance as it’s easy and you can all groove along to it!

TG: Who do you admire most?
NW: I don’t admire only one person, I admire everyone a little bit as we all have different qualities.

TG: Who would you most like to perform with?
NW: I’d like to do a duet with someone like Justin Timberlake as I think he has a fantastic voice, but then again I’m not picky! (hehehe)

TG: Favourite all time ever movie?
NW: My favourite movies would have to be ’10 Things I Hate About You’ and ‘I Am Sam’

TG: What’s the best thing about being a girl?
NW: The best thing about being a girl is that you can have girl’s only slumber parties and chats.

TG: Do you have any pets?
NW: I have two dogs called Star and Princess and a duck named Quakers.

TG: What was the last movie you saw?
NW: The last movie i saw would have to be ‘Jungle Book 2’ (what a coincidence!)

TG: Would you ever appear in a reality tv show?
NW: It depends on what type of show it was. If it was something like ‘Survivor’ I think I could survive.

TG: Do you have any advice for the Total Girl Online readers who want to be performers?
NW: To all the total girls out there make sure that you follow your dreams and work hard at whatever you want to be. Remember that if it’s in your heart you can achieve anything. GO GIRLS!

Love Always, Nikki Webster

The little bird on the wire is soaring higher, writes Bob Hart

SHOWBIZ careers are inclined to start at ground level and, if all goes swimmingly, soar to great heights: not Nikki Webster’s. She first hit our radar screens at altitude – dangling high above Stadium Australia at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympics. On that occasion, a stadium audience of 110,000 – and billions watching her on the telly – prayed silently to the god of strong wires.

In truth, however, Nikki’s career neither began nor ended with that heart-stopping display. The little bird on the wire, then 13, had been pounding stages since she was five. And, metaphorically, she is still up there – starring in stage shows, selling records by the truckload, making commercials, flogging make-up… even causing this ancient cyber-chump to register the 314,254th hit on her website.

She has survived Sydney and Melbourne seasons of The Wizard of Oz, in which she plays Dorothy, and now she is off to Brisbane, where the show will close just before Christmas. She also has a new single, a new album, and lots of ideas . . .

Ask Nikki Webster

Nikki Dub faces some rough treatment from the media, and you wanted to know just what she thinks of the nasty things that are said about her. She also opens up to Smash Hits about radio refusing to play her songs and whether she has a boyfriend!

What do you say to people who suggest you’re growing up too quickly?
Andy, NSW
Well, I’m 15 years old and everybody’s got to grow up. It’s so much fun doing this. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do and it wasn’t something I was forced into. I still get to see my friends and travel around the world. I don’t think you could ask for anything better.

The Return of Nikki Webster

It’s been a hectic few months for Nikki Webster. After finishing up the Sydney season of her musical The Wizard of Oz, she headed straight to the studio to record her second album, before jetting overseas to promote her first single “Strawberry Kisses”. Now she’s back home and not only is she starring in Oz in Melbourne, but she’s also releasing her brand new single “Something More Beautiful” . . .

How far off is the new album?
I’ve finished recording it, it’s in the stages of mixing now. They’re getting it all together and putting in all the drums and stuff. It’s an exciting time, but I haven’t heard much of it yet!

How have you managed to record it while juggling everything else?
I did it at the end of The Wizard of Oz season in Sydney. I went into the recording studio about two weeks after. We’d blocked out three weeks, but it only took a week to do the whole album. We did about three songs a day which is pretty good, and then I went off to Europe, and now I’m doing The Wizard of Oz in Melbourne!

Nikki Rocks!

The wait is over! Nikki Webster is back with a hot new single, Something More Beautiful!

Are you just so excited that you have a new single out!!!
Yes!

What do you think of Something More Beautiful?
I love it! It’s different, because it’s in-between a pop song and a ballad.

How long did it take to make the album?
It took a week to record. Lots of songs are sent in and I listen to them an pick… There were so many good songs, but Something More Beautiful just stood out.

Is it fun to be in a recording studio?
Well, we had heaps of fun! Recording is also a lot of hard work, but it doesn’t feel like work because I love it so much!

How is this album different from the last?
It is a little bit older than Follow Your Heart, but that’s probably the only main … It’s also got some really amazing and fun things on it.

We’re glad you have another album out this year! There’s nothing worse than waiting! Did you have to work doubly hard to do that?
I didn’t want to wait too long either! It’s really hard waiting for the single to be released and the album to come out. I just want it all to happen now!

Have you changed?
I’m still me, but travelling has opened up my eyes a lot. You can always try different things. I don’t think that hurts! I’ve always had a lot of input into what I do, and I still do. I design all of my own clothes and I still say, “Why don’t we try this or that?” I’m definitely still the same person!

Nikki Webster chats to Newsround

Fancy being on first name terms with Kylie, performing in front of millions at the Olympics or going platinum with a single in Australia? Well 15-year-old Nikki Webster has!

Hi Nikki, you are an extremely successful popstar in Australia, tell us about yourself!
When I was young I told my mum and dad that I wanted to go into show business so I started taking lessons. I have appeared in about five different musicals and took the lead in a massive production of the Wizard of Oz. I love being an all round performer from singing to dancing, it’s always been my dream.

For a 15-year-old you lead a pretty untypical life, jetting off across the world and meeting famous celebrities. What do you get up to in the day?
It’s pretty normal when I am not doing promotion. I get up have some tutoring and do some school work. Then it just depends on the day, like I may go to the movies with friends or do a few interviews.

Do you ever regret not being a normal teenager and wish that fame had come to you when you were older?
Not at all. It’s something I have always wanted to do, it doesn’t feel like work. It’s a love.

How do you feel about young popstars singing about issues that they maybe don’t know about such as relationships?
Well, I think that’s fine for everyone else but I like to sing about things that I know, like friends and family. Strawberry Kisses is about a girl and boy and how they are best friends.

What do you think about people who say pop is manufactured?
I always make sure that I have a lot of input. I don’t have a stylist; I design my own clothes and help pick the songs with the record company.

What’s this about you owning Australia’s most expensive pair of jeans?
A charity in Australia called Jeans 4 Jeans hold a charity auction every year and performers and artists give them their jeans to auction off. My jeans sold for more than Russell Crowe’s!

Now that is an achievement! How do you keep your feet on the ground?
My friends are my dancers and so some of them travel with me. They starred in the video for my song Follow Your Heart. They just treat me like normal. Also, I always have a member of my family travelling with me, my dad is staying with me at the moment.

Loads of our readers want to make it as popstars. What advice would you give them?
If it’s in your heart and dreams then give everything a go and be happy.

You Australian gals seem to be taking over the music world, from the likes of Pop Diva Kylie to newcomer Holly Valance. Why do you think this is?
I think it’s because we really enjoy life and we are happy in what we do. We are bubbly no matter what, like Kylie is just really nice and normal. I do like British music though, I’m a big fan of Craig David and Usher and I love watching TV and seeing who is hot over here!

Are you about to do a Samantha Mumba on us and go into films?
Movies would be cool, I am into all of that, performing.
