Proof Of Age

It’s okay – you won’t go to jail for looking at these photos of a purring Nikki Webster playing the sex siren. It’s her 18th birthday, and this is her coming-of-age photo shoot

IT SEEMS LIKE ONLY YESTERDAY THAT OUR Nikki Webster was the cute kid at the Olympics opening ceremony and your little sister was dancing around her Barbie’s to the strains of Strawberry Kisses. But fast-forward five short years and, lo and behold, Nikki is all grown up. In fact, you can even ask her out on a date now. We at FHM are over the moon she has become a gorgeous woman and we’re proud to present to you Nikki Webster, sexy superstar. Happy birthday, Nikki – you look damn hot.

Was it hard posing for this shoot, considering you don’t usually appear in mags like FHM? This is certainly a change of pace from the shoot you did for Barbie magazine…
No, it was great. When I was approached to do this shoot as a celebration of turning 18, the one thing I wanted was to have some control, because of everything that was bound to follow once it hit the stores. But I was happy with the way it went and I tried to make myself look as glamorous as I could.

Game on, says Nikki

She’s a woman, hear her purr. Now that debutante balls are out of fashion, how does an ambitious young woman mark her coming-of-age?

If you’re Nikki Webster, you celebrate with a sexy photo spread in a men’s mag.

That’s right, the little slip of a girl dangling from a wire at the 2000 Olympic Games opening ceremony is now declaring to the world she is a woman.

The Nikster turns 18 on April 30, and this is her reasoning for posing in a silk bodice and hotpants with a lascivious look in her eye for FHM.

“When I was approached to do this shoot as a celebration of turning 18 the one thing I wanted was to have some control, because of everything that was bound to follow once it hit the stores,” Webster told the mag.

“You have to remember you’re doing it because it’s what you want to do – and for every person out there who wants to attack you, there’s plenty more in your corner.”

Nikki’s shock elimination

THE TEEN IS LEFT DEVASTATED AFTER BEING GIVEN A SCORE OF ONE OUT OF TEN

Dancing With The Stars judge Todd McKenney has no regrets about giving Nikki Webster and Sasha Farber’s tango dance a score of one. “I stand by my score and comments,” says Todd.

He says Nikki and Sasha had been using far too much pizazz in their performances while forgetting the basics. “While they hinted at the tango, the music, the feel, the mood were all missing. They didn’t have a connection — the music was appalling. It was a snazzy routine, which we’ve come to expect from Nikki, but it wasn’t the tango,” he says.

But Nikki argued that last week was the first time they tried something different. “We’ve played it safe up until now … [Todd] hasn’t put anyone else down when they’ve done illegal lifts before.

“I’m upset that the judges scores are not consistent. They’re not judging everyone on the same level — they’re judging me like I’m in a professional ballroom competition, not a TV program for charity,” says the devastated teen star.

Dancing controversy

Dancing With the Stars contestant Nikki Webster has accused judge Todd McKenney of using her ousting from the hit rating TV show to get publicity for himself.

McKenney gave Webster and her dance partner, Sasha Farber, a score of one out of 10 after the couple performed the tango.

Fellow judge Paul Mercurio gave Webster’s performance a seven while Helen Ritchie and Mark Wilson marked it a six.

“It was pretty harsh,” Webster said.

“Todd knew what he was doing.

“This was the way he wanted it to go. He wanted a bit of publicity for himself and I think it worked because he has been doing interviews all day.”

NIKKI SHEDS HER GOOD-GIRL IMAGE TO POSE IN A RAUNCHY PHOTO SHOOT

Nikki Webster reveals that when she was asked to pose in a men’s magazine, she had to give it a lot of consideration before deciding she really wanted to do it.

“After I was approached … I really thought about it and thought it may be a good thing for me to do.”

The singer says the men’s lifestyle title offered to do a shoot with her as a present for her 18th birthday in April. “They wanted to say happy birthday and they thought this was a great way to do it,” reveals the bubbly teenager.

Nikki says the shoot is tasteful and that she had final say over the way she was presented. “I had creative control over what I looked like and the team I used to present my pictures, I’m really happy with the outcome – I had such a fun day,” she tells. “And once people see what I’ve done with my shoot they won’t be as shocked.”

Nikki’s role in Dancing With The Stars has allowed her to “explore becoming a woman” and she thinks posing for the men’s magazine is an extension of that growth. “The show [Dancing With The Stars] has been a fabulous thing for my image and presenting it in different ways each week to the viewers,” says the star. “I want people to see my progression into a young lady, as does every other 17-year-old – the only difference is mine is more public.”

The gorgeous blonde says she hopes her dance partner Sasha Farber will be buying the magazine when it hits newsstands. “He bought Bec Cartwright’s issue so he had better buy my issue!”

As for talk of a budding romance with Sasha, Nikki is still waiting. “He hasn’t asked me out yet – he’s a bit slow. It’s not very traditional, but maybe I’ll have to do the asking!”

All grown up

Nikki Webster. Semi-nude. Does that sound wrong? Men’s mag FHM doesn’t think so, having commissioned a series of racy pics of the young entertainer for an upcoming issue. An FHM spokeswoman refused to reveal what Ms Webster was doing or wearing in the shoot, but admitted it was “quite controversial”. While most of us remember Webster as the young slip of a thing who sang at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympics, she is now trying to project a more grown-up image. “Nikki is moving away from being a child,” says her manager, Jason Williamson. “It’s a great shoot, it shows her as an 18-year-old.” Which, strictly speaking, she’s not – Webster is two months shy of her 18th birthday. That, apparently, makes her the perfect age for an FHM debut. “We prefer girls at 18 but the cut-off is 16,” said a spokeswoman for the titillating rag. “We did shoot Holly Valance when she was 16.”

Nikki Webster

Four years ago she stood up and sang at the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney Olympics. Today she’s finishing high school, designing clothes and accessories for her own fashion label and performing live for thousands of fans.

You’ve been very busy designing all of the clothes and accessories for your Nikki Webster range. Where do you come up with the ideas for your stuff?
Designing clothes is something that I’ve wanted to do for so long and I know when I was little, I wanted to wear the clothes that the 17-year-olds wore, so I used to get stuff made especially for me all the time. It’s weird though, sometimes I will be sitting down and an idea will pop into my head, so I will jot it down, but my influences come from everywhere. I travel overseas once or twice a year to places like L.A. or London to have a look at international fashion for inspiration.

A lot of the clothes in your label are pink – are you a bit of a pink girl?
Definitely, and I know that a lot of the people who wear my clothes like pink as well. It’s all of the girly stuff from my label that is in demand at the moment.

What’s your favourite item of clothing from your label?
That’s a hard one! We’ve got some stuff coming out soon which has a cartoon of me drawn on it. It’s going to be an ongoing theme and it’s one that I definitely like because it’s fun.

Four years ago you were just a normal girl, what’s it like now juggling fame, a career in singing and fashion, school and time with family and friends?
It is hard, but you never know what’s going to happen. One day you could have four things on and the next day you could have nothing. Your family and friends kind of get used to it so when you phone them up and say you’re free, they make sure they’re free as well.

Did you ever expect what this is what you’d be doing career-wise?
No, everything has just been amazing. I thought straight after the Olympics I’d go home and go back to school on Monday. (Laughs) But I thought I’d have to wait until after school to release albums so I’ve had a head start in that department!

You’ve had a pretty amazing career for someone who is only 17 years old! What has been your absolute highlight?
I think just performing. The whole package is pretty good, I’ve learned a lot about the entertainment industry and I enjoy meeting new people but I love performing. Live performance is what it’s all about.

Claire’s very special Christmas

Bone cancer sufferer Claire Lincoln was among 5000 delighted kids at the Special Children’s Christmas Party in Sydney.

Christmas came in a tidal wave of fan to 5000 very special kids. Amid a swirling blaze of flashing Christmas lights, spinning rides, laughing clowns, and giant slides, the needy children and their families flocked to the Sydney Showground for the ultimate Christmas party, where wishes were granted in abundance.

A very grateful and excited seven-year-old Claire Lincoln got the biggest surprise of all, thanks to the generosity of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Little Claire’s been very sick with bone cancer. Her extensive treatment – a year of chemo and some radiation – has meant many heartbreaking days away from Mum and Dad.

All Claire wanted was to have some special time with her family, and with the wave of a magic wand from Make-A-Wish, she found herself standing on stage with Bessie Bardot, being told she and her family were going on a wonderful holiday to Linderman Island.

But the Queensland island holiday was just the icing on the cake. The previous day, Claire opened the door of her outer western Sydney home to find her hero Nikki Webster had dropped by to pay her a surprise visit.

Nikki and an excited Claire spent the morning enjoying girl-talk and music. “This is all so wonderful,” said Claire’s elated mum Veronica, 37. “We’re just so humbled by this. We haven’t been able to spend a lot of time together, so this is the ultimate Christmas present – it’s going to bring our family so much happiness!”

But Claire wasn’t the only one on the receiving end of some wonderful Christmas surprises. “We want to make all these great kids feel special,” said a beaming Michael Caton, best known as warm-hearted and ever-proud dad Darryl Kerrigan in The Castle. “It’s fantastic to be involed with Make-A-Wish. It does such great work with kids who’re doing it tough. And at this time of year, I couldn’t think of a better thing to do than bring the magic of Christmas to kids who might otherwise have a pretty ordinary Christmas.”

Michael joined Woman’s Day editor Alana House and Bessie Bardot, who was dressed as a yellow fairy, in handing out a mountain of toys to some very grateful and clearly excited kids.

Woman’s Day is a prime supporter of Make-A-Wish, and Alana – along with the fun-loving team from the Day – was on hand to spread some much-needed Christmas cheer. And judging by the children’s faces, beaming as they clutched their presents and screaming with delight on the rides, that much-needed cheer was overflowing.

The day was also very special for Bessie, whose brother suffers from cerebral palsy. “I think ‘Special Children’ is a very important focus for us all,” she told Woman’s Day. “Especially around this time of year. I think all children should be looked after at Christmas, and often the ‘special’ kids are forgotten. But not today! Today’s a wonderful day, not only for these kids, but also for their wonderful parents.”

Nikki’s all grown up!

The Olympic golden girl has grown into a fully-fledged pop princess, all without a hint of scandal.

Funny man Rove McManus pretended to spike her lemonade – and she once trashed Michael Jackson’s hotel suite – but that’s the extent of any scandal in pint-sized singer Nikki Webster’s past. No Drew Barrymore-style stints in rehab, no battles with booze and pills, no anorexia or bulimia scares, not even any unsuitable boyfriends.

“In fact, no serious boyfriends at all,” laughs Australia’s former child sweetheart, who flew to worldwide fame as “Hero Girl” at the Sydney Olympics in front of four billion TV viewers. “Maybe the time will come one day.”

At 17, the curly-haired poppet’s all grown up. And still the only secret in her closet is a serious fashion habit, courtesy of her best-selling Kmart clothing range. She may be a good girl, but this teenager is far from ordinary, whatever she might say. After all, how many 17-year-olds have partied with Michael Jackson? Nikki sang a duet with Michael, before his subsequent disgrace, on the then-superstar’s HIStory tour of Australia. It was her first, and only, brush with rock ‘n’ roll-style bad behavior.

The Big Arvo interview

Interview by Luke Jacobz

[We’ll Be One plays]

Luke: At the age of thirteen my guest became one of the most recognisable Australians in history. She’s performed with Michael Jackson, she’s been nominated for ARIA’s, plus she’s also doing her HSC. Most importantly, she is my friend. Nikki Webster, how are you?

Nikki: Good!

Luke: OK Nikki, greatest hit album at 17. Why?

Nikki: Why? Well basically it’s just kind of to say this is four years from the Olympics, and you know I’m turning 18, so just to kind of sum up what I’ve done over the past couple of years. It’s got the Olympic tracks on. Continue reading The Big Arvo interview
