Plot Synopsis
Mark, a filmmaker, and Roger, a rock singer, live in New York’s East Village in a run down apartment block, now owned by their ex-roommate Benny, who has married into money. On Christmas Eve, Benny presents them with an ultimatum; either convince Maureen (Mark‘s ex-lover) to cancel her midnight performance protesting Benny‘s real estate plans to evacuate the neighbouring tent-city and build a cyber-arts studio, or pay their last year’s rent (which Benny knows they cannot do).
Simultaneously, Collins, another ex-roommate is mugges outside the building. Angel, a street drummer, rescues him. Meanwhile, Mark, refusing Benny‘s demand to stop Maureen, decides instead to help Maureen to set up her performance.
A few minutes later, Roger meets Mimi, his neighbour, and despite their mutual attraction, Roger finds himself unable to become involved with her.
Following Maureen‘s performance, the friends gather at The Life Cafe. Benny is there with his wealthy father-in-law – while Mark and the others take over the cafe. Meanwhile, in the tent-city, a riot has erupted (sparked by Maureen‘s performance) which Mark films. Benny locks Mark and Roger out of their building – as Mimi and Roger recognise their common bond and finally unite.
Act Two begins on New Years Eve – with Mark, Roger and the others breaking back into their apartment. The rest of the act follows the events of that year – culminating Christmas Eve, one year later.
