Nikki Webster turns 30
The former child star plans her big musical comeback after 17 years
It’s been almost two decades since petite and wide-eyed Nikki Webster wowed the crowds at the Sydney 2000 Olympics opening ceremony, flying high above spectators in a pink dress.
Now, Woman’s Day can reveal a stunt for the Sunrise weather team last week – which saw Nikki re-record her chart-topping hit Strawberry Kisses – is just the start of a career resurgence for the iconic singer and dancer.
Not only has the song, which spent seven weeks at the top of the charts in 2001, found a new generation of fans, but Nikki is hoping it’s the catalyst for the next phase in her career.
“I’m all for Nikki 2.0, bring it on!” the singer, who turns 30 on April 30, tells Woman’s Day.
“I’ve written some new stuff. It’s just a matter of trying to work out the right time for me to release it.”
Nikki has been quietly collaborating with several producers in Nashville on her upcoming pop-driven tracks. And with some work engagements in the US over the net two weeks, she hopes to make more progress on the songs.
“I like to create more work for myself,” she admits. “I had a busy childhood, so I don;t really know any different.”
Along for the trip to the US is Skylah, her three-year-old daughter with husband Matthew McMah. And Nikki says she’s thrilled to include her little girl in her new musical journey.
“Skylah stars in the clip for Strawberry Kisses! It was so nice to be able to include her in the project 17 years on,” the pround mum says.
“She loves the song – she walks to the shops singing it. I promise I didn’t make her do that!”
As well as a love for the catchy song, the pair share a passion for performing. Nikki owns three dance studios in NSW and Skylah is a talented pupil.
“She loves the stage. It’s like she switches on and she’s a different kid. That was very much like me when I was a kid. My first musical was at five.”
Nikki says she’d happily see Skylah follow in her footsteps. “As long as she works hard and is determined, I’ll be behind her every step of the way.”
